Composer and guitarist, Marcelo Birck is a long time activist in Brazilian rock music. Founder of notorious groups in the local scene (Graforréia Xilarmônica, Aristóteles de Ananias Jr. and Os Atonais), his solo career began with his eponymous 2000 album, which can be described as avant-rock. Since then, Birck has played regularly in festivals dedicated to new musical aesthetics such as Isso é Música and TIM Festival, alongside artists like The Bad Plus and Black Dice (USA) and Caetano Veloso (Brazil). In 2008, his second solo álbum, “Timbres Não Mentem Jamais” (Timbres Never Lie) was released. Nowadays, he directs the project "Matéria Sonora", focused on the construction of musical instruments with disposables.

“Quarteto 1986” is one of his first compositions. Simple textures reminding medieval music are used to create a mood of clarity and lightness, in which the modulations happen not by the changes of tonal centers, but by the contrasts of scales and rhythms. In this edition, the original version (suitable for both professionals and students) and also a revision are included. Also included is a facsimile of the first page of the original manuscript.

The work's title and the traditiional children's rhymes which preface each of the movements were chosen to reflect the character of the South East Coast of England and its historic fishing industry.

"Windways" was originally intended for six solo performers, but is equally suitable for a larger ensemble with several players to a part.
